How do I Join DCC?

We get that question a lot (which is great!), so I thought I’d take a few minutes to answer it.  Here’s how you become a member of our great family:

Accept Jesus Christ as your Savior

  • That’s the most important step!  Joining a local church is a visible, tangible representation of your membership in the universal Church.  Entry into that Church will always go through Jesus Christ.
  • Accepting Jesus as your savior means you believe He is the virgin-born Son of God, lived a sinless life, was crucified and died a literal death on the cross, was bodily resurrected,  walked out of an empty tomb 3 days later, and He will return one day to judge all of mankind
  • Confess your sinfulness and need for a savior to save you from your sins
  • Repent of a life lived apart from God’s authority and leadership, committing to a new life of discipleship and spiritual growth
  • Symbolically crucify your sinful self through the immersion of Christian baptism

Affirm agreement with our statement of faith

  • You can find our statement of faith on the back of your weekly bulletin or here on our website.

Publicly declare your desire to be a part of Defiance Christian Church

  • At the end of every Sunday morning church service, we sing a closing song often referred to as the “invitation” (or, perhaps “benediction” depending on your denominational tradition)
  • Come down the aisle during that song and tell one of the pastors you’d like to join DCC that day
  • After the song is over, he will ask you to (“Repeat after me…”) publicly declare your faith in Jesus Christ and decision to accept him as your forgiver and leader
    • Your new church family will speak right along with you—reaffirming their faith in Jesus
  • Congratulations: you’re a member!

Commit to attending our membership class

  • Our membership class is DCC 101: Connecting to DCC
  • We typically offer the class three to four times per year and ask that you take it as soon as possible after joining.

If you have more questions about Defiance Christian Church, please contact the office (office@defiancechristian.org) or our Connect team (connect@defiancechristian.org) .  I am happy you are considering calling DCC your church home.  I look forward to years of Kingdom service together!

Christianity 101: I’m Brand New!

Christianity 101: I’m Brand New!

I can still remember when I started going to church.  As soon as the minister got behind the pulpit and started Xnty 101 jpgreading the Bible, I was lost!  I didn’t know the difference between the New Testament and the Old, if Moses and Jesus were brothers, or what to do with the bread and juice.  I needed a class like this.

Staring Sunday, April 15th, we’ll be offering Christianity 101 as a new Sunday School class.  I’ll be teaching the course, and we’re going to cover five major topics that’ll give you a running start (or refresher!) in the Christian life.

Each section will end with a Q&A session.  You’ll be surrounded by other people with the same questions you may be holding in, so there is no threat of asking a dumb question.  If you’re still worried, I’ll even have an anonymous bucket: just drop the question in and I’ll do my best to answer it.

If you’d like, you can sign up online so we’ll know how much space and coffee we’ll need.  Registration is not required though.  You can always just show up!

Stewards of Children

In the 60’s Bob Dylan wrote a song “The Times They are a Changin”, which still applies today.

Due to this fallen world we unfortunately have to be prepared for the sad, ugly situation some children face today.

We have recently changed our insurance policy and we are now required to provide training for ALL of our staff that serve children and youth as well as run background checks. By mandating this training and requesting your permission to run a background check we are in compliance with our insurance policy.

“Stewards of Children” is the program we are presenting.  This is a program that educates adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibility to child sexual abuse, and motivates them to courageous action.  It will also instruct us on staying “above suspicion”.

On Tuesday, January 24th, at 6:00 pm we will meet at the church. Cheryl Robbins will lead the 2-1/2 hour program. This is mandatory training if you currently teach or help with any age group, including the nursery, at DCC.

Due to the mandatory nature of this meeting, if for any reason you are unable to attend due to a prior commitment, please notify the church office as soon as possible. Otherwise you will be unable to continue in your capacity.

If you are already certified in Child Abuse Prevention please bring a copy of your certificate to the office for us to keep on file, no later than Fri. Jan. 22nd.

If you do not bring a copy or attend the class we will take that as your decision to decline further involvement as a volunteer.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

In His Service,

Pastor Jim

2012 Annual Meeting

Church Family,

Multiple members of our eldership and leadership staff are not able to make the Jan 15th meeting due to unavoidable commitments.  We want to give our church members an opportunity to talk with as many leaders as possible, so we are moving the meeting to Jan 22nd and combining those services into one.

The schedule for January 22nd will be:

  • 9:30 Sunday School
  • 10:45 Combined Service
  • 12:00 Annual Meeting

Everyone is encouraged to stay for the annual meeting.  We will announce new leadership, briefly discuss where we’ve been in 2011, and present goals for 2012.  There will also be a short Q&A session with Jim Dotson, our new Family Life Pastor.

I look forward to seeing you all there as we continue serving together, preparing people to love God and each other.

For the Kingdom,

-Pastor Bill
